The Great Popularity of Latin Music

What is behind the great populism of recent years in which Latin music has been the protagonist? Music, in general, is not a secret that breaks borders. It only takes a peculiar rhythm or a catchy lyric to draws people’s attention; in Latin music, it has both components, and this is not new at all; the Latinos know a lot about rhythms and lyrics in general. Over time, music for the Latino community, such as immigrants in the United States, maintains their culture deeply rooted.

History of Latin music

Let’s look back in time, as almost the entire written history of the emergence of Latin America stands out with the arrival of Spanish colonization to the new continent. Latin music has many roots and combinations, and it comes from Indigenous, African, Jews, and Arabs descent. However, the most vital characteristic of this music comes from its dances and religious expressions. There are countless different genres in Latin music, each of which comes from a country or region, to mention a few are the tropical genres from the Antilles: Salsa (Cuba-Puerto Rico), Merengue (Dominican Republic), Reggaeton (Puerto Rico-Panama), Cumbia (Centro America) among many others.

The arrival of Latin Music in the US

In the 1970s, a group of Caribbean immigrants in New York City gave life to today’s genre as salsa. Mixing elements of genres already conceived in their countries of origin, the most significant influence of salsa comes from the Afro-Cuban rhythm Guaguancó and the rhythmic letter from la Decima with deep roots in Puerto Rico. There are many names behind who invented the genre, but the most prominent are Bobby Cruz, Pacho Cristal, and Johnny Pacheco, all with different contributions. The rhythmic base is the percussion from African heritage and the metallic air instruments adapted from Jazz.

The Boom of the genre occurred when La Fania All Start emerged in the early 1970’s; musicians and singers came together to give music and dance to Latinos in New York City. Since then, the world has heard, danced, and enjoyed the Salsa genre.

Like practically everything in life, music changes generationally, and in Latin music, it is not the exception; However, every country maintains its music and culture alive.
